Informal Settlement and Land Allocation
One of the feature of the hapazard development of housing and communities in Jamaica has been the encroachment and arbitrary spread of homes in lands with no planning development. Successive governments have been complicit in aiding these developments when it suits them. The rightful ownership of land by indigenous Jamaicans is a part of the reparatory justice that we would have hoped was part of the way of giving hope to the ambitious but those with limited resources, specifically land. Jamaicans are resourceful by nature and their potential has been retarded because governments has not seen it fit to develop a credible system of land allocation to these people when they can at a stroke of a pen trade off valuable lands to foreign entities. If that,s not a slap in the face of the Jamaican people I do not know what is. As the recent flood rains has proven, the risky development of these lands in unsuitable places has created havoc and great life changing loses in the process. Large parts of Kingston, the capital is overcrowded and some permanent solution at housing needs to be acted on urgently and afforded the development the city deserves because after all it should be the show piece of Jamaica. How can our leader rest at night when they drive , or engage with this depravity without the necessary effort to address the problems. We sometimes blame people who behave in a dysfunctional civil way but for this, it is squarely on the shoulders of government. Its time you stop short changing Jamaicans on their assets than bartering it away to foreign entities, where does the priority lie?
